I Visited Clarity Solutions

In this series, we're visiting Southeast's Mission Partners to understand their vision and how God is using them in the community.

By Carla Williams

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I arrived at Clarity Solutions, a pregnancy clinic and resource center that began in a church’s basement in 2001 and is now a five-building ministry across two counties. Within five minutes of my arrival at Clarity, I knew one thing: Prayer is a really big deal there. It’s how they start their day. It’s what happens extensively before any major decision, and it’s what sustains the whole ministry.

They have a prayer room where volunteers can come and intercede for the ministry throughout the day. And they have a text alert they send out when urgent needs arise, like the arrival of an abortion-minded woman who comes in to discuss her options. Prayer is the foundation for everything they do.

But that dependence on prayer is absolutely necessary given the weight of what the ministry carries. When women come to Clarity, they’re usually pregnant and not sure what to do. Clarity offers hope, encouragement, wisdom, and a solid plan for holistic care and guidance for each woman.

The Women

If a woman thinks she’s pregnant and doesn’t know what to do, she can schedule an appointment at one of Clarity’s medical facilities in Elizabethtown or Radcliff. There, she’ll experience a lab-quality pregnancy test, an ultrasound, and counseling and resources for her next steps. Often, women simply don’t know what their options are. The nurses at Clarity’s medical facility can explain the choices available and provide consultation and resources as the mother determines her next steps.

The women might believe they’re ill-equipped for pregnancy and parenthood and have no idea how to move forward. Sometimes they feel totally alone and scared, and they think abortion is the only option for them. That’s when Clarity can help.

Clarity offers an extensive, Gospel-centered program called Aspire for expectant parents through their client services. Parents who enroll in the program receive weekly mentoring, attend prenatal and postpartum classes, and earn points to use in the Clarity boutique for baby supplies and clothes. All services are free, but depend entirely on the mom’s willingness to participate and learn.

Through the Aspire program, moms who participate will earn everything they could need for their baby, including clothes, diapers, wipes, blankets, feeding supplies, a car seat, and a pack-n-play bed. They’ll also be equipped with skills for parenting, healthy living, wise financial management, professional development, and so much more. The moms will have weekly, individualized mentoring and guidance. And more importantly than all that, they’ll be reminded every day that God loves them. They are prayed for and celebrated in each step of their journey.

Additional Services

While some women face this journey alone, there are often boyfriends or husbands who are just as desperate for some guidance and hope. They might have had poor examples of good dads in their lives, and they have a desire to break that cycle for their children. Clarity offers a special track just for the men. Through a program called AIM, men can find community, advice, mentorship, and the tools to lovingly guide their families well.

I also learned about the program Clarity provides for post-abortive mothers. The Healing Journey is an intensive, compassionate program for women who have chosen abortion in the past and are still reeling from the physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual cost of their decision.

One key service Clarity introduced recently is prevention. They’ll speak to high schools, youth groups, and other gatherings of teens about sexual health, responsibility, and consequences. They’re excited about the opportunity to have these conversations with young men and women before they’re in the position of an unexpected pregnancy.

Volunteers

While I was learning about Clarity, there was a steady stream of volunteers coming and going. Some stepped into the prayer room to intercede for Clarity for an hour. A handful tucked into a workroom to stuff mailers into envelopes. One took her post at the reception desk, answering phone calls from desperate families with the practiced grace of someone who has been serving women in crisis for years. There’s a group of women who come periodically to restock the boutique and switch out seasonal items. There are also volunteers who mentor women or teach classes for the Aspire program.

It’s clear that a team of committed and passionate volunteers is crucial to the success of Clarity. The staff talks about their volunteers with awe and admiration, knowing that those faithful servants make the work they do at Clarity possible. Requirements for volunteers range a lot, depending on what they’ll be doing. Volunteers who have contact with the clients have a much more thorough vetting process, and they receive ongoing support and coaching from the staff.

Holistically Pro-Life

As I talked with the staff and volunteers at Clarity, I thought about criticism I’ve heard frequently about how Christians are really more “pro-birth” than “pro-life.” The idea is that we only want women to not have abortions, but we aren’t willing to support any real change in their lives that would equip them to succeed as mothers. Nothing could be less true at Clarity.

This is a group of faithful servants who are enthusiastic champions for every baby, woman, and man in their care. Because of their belief that God loves and cares about each person, the Clarity team members offer services and support for every stage of the journey, starting with the first pregnancy test and ending with confident, capable parents on a whole new trajectory for their lives.
